I have a 87 GN code 31.
I have replaced the waste gate Solenoid.
When I drive and baby it the engine light will not come on. When I stomp the gas a litttle the engine light will then come on.
What entirely will cause this code.
I have a boost gauge ordered from ATR.
Anolog dash. Car other wise seems to run ok.
Thanks,

The reason why the light comes on is that only under certain conditions is that the solenoid is called upon to work when you get under boost.

If you don't get into boost, the solenoid just sits there. You stomp it, the ECM tells it to start beeding off and sees an open or shorted circuit and sets the code.

Check the fuse in the fusebox (often the cause). If that's not it, then start tracing the ground and ECM wire for a break or short.

Ken
I just went out and replaced the fuse that was blown. I then proceeded to drive car. I stomped a little no engine light. I then drove a few miles turned around and stomped it hard it felt like the car coughed a little then the engine light came back on. It is code 31 and the 10 amp fuse is blown again. My stock wastegate is rusted all the way down the shaft and the bell of the wastegate is not pretty either. What causes this fuse to blow ? Is it safe to drive car ? With this problem ? If I baby it is it ok to drive just to and from for paint job ?
Thanks Jay

Sounds like there may be a couple problems...

First one is the electrical problem that is causing the fuse to blow. Sounds like there is a short in the pink/black wire that supplies the signal to the WG soleniod. Need to trace that down.

Second one is the mechanical problem of a sticking WG.

You can drive the car, but I'd stay out of WOT until it's fixed. It could overboost and blow the headgaskets (or worse).

Ken
I am in the process of tracing pink and black wire that supplies the signal to the waste gate solenoid so far I didn't see any visible short?
Could a defective, sticking waste-gate cause this code 31. I was told by ATR before I submitted this post that It would not cause a code 31 that the waste-gate is mechanical.ATR told me to check my MAP sensor. I will install my boost gauge when it arrives later this week. How can I check my waste-gate to see if it preforms properly.
Thanks Jay

I coped this from trouble code Ref.

Code 31
Typical causes for this code include:

1) Poor or corroded connections between the ECM and the waste-gate solenoid
2) Open or shorted solenoid
3) Defective, sticking or maladjusted waste-gate linkage
4) Defective ECM

Sticking WG is mechanical and it shouldn't really affect anything.

The MAP sensor isn't hooked to the ECM ... maybe they meant "MAF" sensor (even so, shouldn't have much to do with this).

It's most likely the solenoid or the ECM.

I traced pink/black wire no short.
Pulled ECM looked it over.I put a new fuse in car took it out ran hard and great no engine light code 31. Stoped very happy thought ECM harness was ajar and it was fixed.I eat supper then got back in car drove still smileing that my code was gone I Stomped it hard WOT. Then poof engine light is back on code 31.I just had a stereo in stalled they ran to RCA wires to trunk. They did have to move ECM to run RCA wires under it. Should not have harmed the ECM ??
I am minutes from buying a new ECM for $97.00
Lifetime replacement. What do you think ? Maybe my 14 year old ECM didnt like to be moved?
If a ECM does not fix the problem then what ?
I looked in the archive for some help.
I was also told that you can buy a 14 year old soleniod that is bad.
How can I check my waste/gate to see if it is working correctly.
Earlyer you wrote: Check the fuse in the fusebox (often the cause). If that's not it, then start tracing the ground and ECM wire for a break or short.
What ground are you refering to and were is it.
Many Thanks

THIS INFO WAS VERY HELPFUL CHANGED THE FUSE AND FIXED IT. DOES ANY ONE THINK IT WOULD CAUSE A LOST OF POWER?
