My readings on Turbolink for my (stock) MAF sensor never seem to get above 200gm/s. I have a cold air kit installed and have tried playing with the pipes to eliminate possible turbulence to no avail.
Is this a pretty sure sign that it's on its way out ?

The car is running strong, I'm wondering what effects I should expect from a failing MAF.

Word around the campfire is that the replacement
units are hit & miss. Anyone had good experience with a replacement ? If so what brand/vendor did you use. (You can send me a private mail if you don't want to plug vendors here)

I'm kind of in a bind since I just spent like $200 on this kit, and if I go with a newer style
and translator, I'll have to dump even more cash on new pipes for the thing.....

I am having the same problem, my MAF settings won't go above 189 at WOT.. I have a Kenne Belle system on it, and a new MAF(Bosch) Car seems to run fine sometimes and then it will buck and engine light will come on and then go off, not pushin any codes, works find on the highway and tons of power, just the odd time in the city when you crank it it will mess up.. I'm thinking this may have something to do with it???

Any ideas? These cars are waay to sensitive, I havent had any good luck since i bought it.. loving it, but no luck what so ever!

Just a thought, have you tried removing one of the two MAF screens?

Dave:

It is *possible* that the MAF is on it's way out. What were your gps before the cold air kit went on, and what is the boost level (and setup)?

On the aftermarket MAFs, I had no good experiences with them, and after the third one in as many days, I threw up my hands and called Modern Muscle (now Ramchargers) for a Translator... never looked back.

Ed:

I have seen those symptoms with aftermarket MAFs. A rather new stock MAF I keep around eliminated the symptoms 4 out of 4 times so far.

And yes, these cars can be sensitive, but they ('86-87) are 17+ years old, and parts fail and deteriorate. I went through a tribulation that took 1 year to figure out. Hang in there, and you will love it even more. :-)

MAF from Trak Auto now Advance Auto. My cold air combo is ATR with 14" filter always at 255. Take the cold air off just run the filter under the hood and see if the #'s improve.
Make sure boost and fp are at peak level.
02V are at least 790 top end
TPS set correct at wot
Air filter big enough.
Key on maf# motor on maf#
I have seen some cold air kits to restrictive more so the home made ones.

Wow, resurrection of an old post....

Dean: I didnt have any readings before the cold air kit went on. My car is pretty stock.
Hooker Exhaust, Walbro Pump,Adjustable FPR & Wastegate. I made sure my O2 and IAC numbers were good. I never got any codes and the car ran really well. Boost was ~16lbs

I bit the bullet and got a T+ and LT1 MAF.
Over this winter I also added a THDP & RJC power Plate. I will be putting the car on the road this week so I will see how my numbers are now go and repost soon.

Oh yeah, the original post is fairly old, isn't it? Ed MacKenzie started it all. ;-)

Did you have any luck with aftermarket MAFs, or trying a known good one from a friend? 16 psi isn't very high (stockish), but as I recall ~16 should get you well into the 200s gps range. I recall a couple years back hunting for a reason for my MAF #s not getting to 255+, but unfortunately, old age is taking it's toll, and I don't recall what all I did. :-(
