hi my 87 GN will just shut down at anytime it starts back up but keeps shutting down a few seconds later. I had few near crashes because of it. I've changed the starter, alternator, ignition,& battery i don't get in error codes when this happens I took the main CPU chip from my friend's t-type & installed the same result happened then I put mine back in & it hasn't shut down since I'm totally confused on this & scared the shut down bug may return

Does this happen only while driving, or will it quit at idle in park?

How's the fuel pump and related wiring? Does it immediately cut off, or does it stumble? If it just immediately cuts off you have a bad ECM or a grounding/wiring problem somewhere. When it dies, do you lose all power, or just the motor?

Try your friends entire ECM box and not just the chip to see if it still does it.

Well - there's a lot of wires on a car..:)
But it's not too bad depending on what else happens when it does. Im also going to throw out that your crank sensor could be bad. That sensor controls the spark and will kill a running motor anytime. But - usually they dont start back up :)
There's a lot of possibilities, but what you need to determine is if it's something MOTOR related, or CAR related.

What I mean is..when the car dies..do the lights go off as well, and no sensors, relays, fans, gauges work, etc., Service Engine Soon light?, or is it JUST the motor that dies?

It's ridiculously easy to swap ECM's with your buddy..try that first. It'll take 10 min. Then post back with some more details about what the electrical system acts like when it happens, and we'll try to get it narrowed down for ya at least.

I'd say crank sensor. I had a car, that did the same thing. This car ate a couple of crank sensors. It would die, not throw a code, and most of the time it would start right up afterwards. It wasn't a Turbo Regal, but it was a GM with the SFI 3.8. (1988 Olds Ciera)
