Hey all, here's what i was dealing with yesterday. Maybe someone has some advice. Drove 87 GN down main street about 15 miles, warm weather. Was idling good, running fine, shifting hard, even chirping the tires a bit when upshifting. I park and go inside for 15 minutes. Start her up again, starts fine, pull onto the road, cruise about a mile, stop for a light. I pull forward (in OD the whole time) and almost instantly the engine falters and then dies after a few seconds. All electrical still working and no SES light. Rich/lean gauge indicated normal stoich. mix just before it died. I put it in park, restart, almost immediately the same problem. We push it out of the road and are able to nurse it back after it dieing about two more times.

The only things i know are: it seems to happen only when there's a load on the engine; pulling on the throttle while in Park sounds pretty much fine. So it seems like it could be a sensor. Since it happens when getting into gear, could be TCC solenoid-related? I'm going to try the IAC and TPS calibration procedures tonight, just because it seems like something i should do.

These symptoms sound familiar to anyone?

Yep, my guess is the MAF or coil.

Try the tap test and try to see how she runs with the MAF disconnected.

followup: i recorded a bunch of frames last night with turbolink to start looking at what it could be. i saved the file out as excel and the raw ecm file here:

k, i've had time to test some things out. given the bad cam sensor / EST codes in turbolink, it seems like the culprit is the ignition module.

borrowed a good fuel pressure gauge and measured pressure at the rail: remains up and steady from ignition thru idle up to when it dies, so it doesn't seem like a fuel issue. measured voltage drop with a DVOM at one of the injectors, and that stays good as well -- injectors seem to be getting juice consistently. when it dies it's pretty global and sudden, all cylinders, no misfires or stumbling. checked continuity from ECM to the ignition module and all wiring is solid, and the CCCI fuse is intact. thinking that i have a bad ignition module, and that primary ignition's hosed. since the cam sensor and others report to the ECM through the module, this seems consistent.

does that seem right?

john
