Had a problem with cruise failing to work. found wires cut on back of turn signal stalk. pulled stalk out and found the four wires were all disconnected from the switch inside. all the manuals talk about is replacing the whole assembly. Must come pre-wired? Can I rewire the switch? will the cruise portion seperate from the stalk? Which wires are for what? any help would be great. Thanks, Rob
I believe that you need to get the whole assy. If the wire is still in the steering column, you can use it to drag the new wire down the column. I have replaced mine twice, there is a little sheath in the column to protect the wire, and it was quite a PITA the first time, had to take of the wheel, etc. Second time I just cut off the little connector on the new assy, attached the new wire to the old wire, pulled it down through the column, and soldered the connector back on under the dash and plugged it in, took about 30 minutes.
Piece of pie, easy as cake. I don't believe the chrome stalk is available any longer, but the black one works fine. I do know that the stalk for the '88 Jeep Cherokee is the same piece [chrome], and it may still be available from them, not sure.

This is a very common problem with GM cruise control systems. You can actually solder the wires back on the switch and you may not have to remove it then. The set button just pops off, once that is off you will see a retaining clip inside, pull that out. The body of the switch looks like it was two pieces, but it is one. You can break off the end peice and pull the switch out solder your wires back on, super glue or jb weld the end back on.
It may be easier to do this with the entire stalk removed You can tie a piece of wire on the "circuit board" end and pull through the column. You might get lucky and be able to string it through, but sometimes it might just be easier to pull the whell off and start disassembling the column (good time to go a little further and tighten up the notoriously loose tilt bolts).
Or you can remove the entire stalk and replace with a new one from the parts store, but these will have a black washer lever rather than the stock chrome. If you are concernec about originality I think there was somebody on the list reproducing the chrome ones.
