Had a ticking sound in the engine this weekend, found that the crankshaft position sensor was hitting the ring. I noted that the sensor had quite a bit of play in it that made setting the sensor impossible. I took it apart and two 1/2" black pieces slid out from alongside the sensor. When I pushed them in all the way, the sensor was now tight. It appears that these things wedge the sensor into the holder. Am I correct?
There is nothing that holds these in. What is the correct method for retaining them? Glue?
You have an old style crank sensor that uses the tension keys. They tend to come loose and rattle. Replace the crank sensor with a current production unit available from GM.

I am glad there is a better sensor out there. I was surprised at what a rube goldberg arrangement the one I have is.
I received the new sensor today. It looks very similar to the old one. I haven't installed it yet. I do notice that the Groove seems to be tighter than the old one but it looks like it will sit in the holder the same way. Is there any more help you can give me?
As a final note to this thread, if you have the old crank sensor system that I have, you need to replace both the sensor AND the bracket. The new bracket grips the sensor directly. The old system had the sensor sitting in a holder and then the bracket clamped the holder.

I have an '85 T-Type. Since I rebuilt it I've had numerous problems. One problem I'm having now is lack of accelleration...every time I push the pedal more than 1/3 of the way down, it acts like it's falling on it's face, yet when I put it to the floor it wants to launch, but it feels like I'm holding the brakes. What to do? Crank sensor? Cam sensor? IAC is reset. TPS is set. Puzzled
