Keith D Stegall (Kds) | Sunday, October 28, 2001 - 04:52 pm Going home yesterday the radio shut off and it felt like the car died also. I tried to leave a little later but as soon as I put it in reverse the car died I tried it again and it died once more. After that last try it wouldn't do any thing I noticed that I didn't have idiot lights nor a radio. This is what I found today I have no power going to the fuse block except for the interior light and headlights. All other is dead, no horn, no radio and most important no ignition. I have power at the starter but that is as far as I think it goes. Only thing I know is that from the starter to the fuse block there is a nasty problem. Please help |
Alan Downing (Adowning) | Sunday, October 28, 2001 - 07:13 pm Keith, Sounds like one of the fusible links at the starter let go. Sometimes you can give a gentle pull and the bad one will pull apart. Just gently pull on each side of the"larger puffy area" (the fuse) Otherwise, a multimeter or testlight will work if you have one. Good Luck Alan |
Keith D Stegall (Kds) | Monday, October 29, 2001 - 11:05 am The fusible links are good, I have power after them. I am stuck once again. Does any one think it might be a ground loose or the power wire is shorted to ground which one is more likley? |
Steve Wood (Stevewood) | Monday, October 29, 2001 - 11:34 am It's a pretty simple route, from the starter, three fusible links....one powers fans, one powers lights, and the other powers everything else. They run thru the wiring harness around the back of the engine and to the firewall connector with the exception of the fan wire. The one that powers everything else also powers the blower motor relay in the engine compartment so if you have voltage between the red wire on the relay and ground, then you know the fusible link is good. If you don't have power at the ecm/bat fuse, then you know the problem is between the link and this point. The wire from the firewall connector does go to a splice under the dash on the left side of the column and emerges into a number of different routes...one of which goes to the above mentioned fuse. Under the hood, behind the valve cover on the driver's side, if you lift the wiring harness high enough, you will find a metal screw tip emerging into the compartment about half and inch, as I recall. It has a habit of working itself into the wiring harness and finding wires to short out. It is almost impossible to see this screw tip unless you move the harness....If you have no power at the firewall connector but do at the blower relay, I think I might look there, first... My advice to everyone is to get a manual with the wiring diagrams...sooner or later, you will need them. |
