I have just finished a total tune up on my 84 GN (timing chain, bearings, heads) and for some reason I can't seem to get the timing right on my car. Every book and list of How to's say to get on TDC and check voltage and turn crank until it drops and there you go. Well its not that easy for me!! i finally had a volt reading of 7 but no matter how much I rotate it never drops.. What is wrong and what needs replaced. Someone please help so I can drive once again thanx
Well, first of all, it's not timing that you are setting there. It's the cam sensor, which affects the injector sequence.
That said, if you can't get it to drop a couple things:
1. Make sure you are on #1 TDC ... not 180 degrees off
2. Make sure that the cam sensor itself isn't 180 degrees out. Try turning it around in the hole (it only fits into the slot in the oil pump shaft at 0 and 180 degrees out.)
That should get it to work...
Both ways of moving the cam sensor were tried but the voltage just wont drop. could it be the cap on the cam sensor?? if not how could i tell if it is bad or not and how much is one thanx
Make sure your cam sensor isn't inserted wrong... you'll have to remove it and reinsert it.
It sure sounds like it's 180 degrees out. If that isn't it, the cap is about $30 last time I looked.
both ways of inserting the cam senor with no luck. i even went as far as getting on TDC with the cam sensor out with everything hooked up and manually rotated the shaft but the voltage wouldnt drop. all troubles seem to point to the cap. to know for sure isnt there a way test the cap to make sure it is bad. what are the specifications for this item

If you had the sensor out and rotated it by hand, with no change, then it sounds like the sensor is gone. What are you using to test it? A cam sensor tool, or a voltmeter? If using a voltmeter, are you sure you have the right wire? According to the tech articles, it is the middle wire. Good luck.
