eric smith (Erock1971) | Wednesday, June 27, 2001 - 09:25 pm I went to the track today 1st pass with the posi unit in I get slightly better 60's now but this damn chip, I hit 3rd gear and it falls flat on its face it drops to 10 psi boost then creeps to 12 1st gear gets 15 psi 2nd flashes to17 or 18 then falls to16 then ofcourse 3rd is so bad i actualy move off the back of the seat. It's a kenny bell ( old chip from 10 years ago) suggestions? I have a slightly modified 86 gn it has low miles so i'm not going to rip the moter apart big time ill save that for the 87 t type next year, but It has stock gear new 2 and a half duel with flow masters cold air in take and the usual little things like 160 therm, etc. its only running 14.30s at best granted im only getting 2.3 60 foots with the 26 in tall tires but 95 mile an houre is slow the 3rd gear could cause that but I still think it should run better ... do you ? what chip does anyone think would be good? i would like 17 or so psi in all gears or close tnx |
Jay Jones (Xtinct) | Wednesday, June 27, 2001 - 09:38 pm Give CPP a shout. Your gonna get a ton of opinions on chips & this is just mine. But i've had them in all my TR's(5) & they work great. 281-540-FAST is there #. Take care, Jay. |
Ken Mosher (Kenmosher) | Thursday, June 28, 2001 - 07:39 am First, although a chip upgrade is a good thing ... it sounds like you have a legitimate problem. The symptoms you describe could be a lot of things... some more info would help the diagnosis, such as:
- Do you have some scan tool numbers?
- Does the car have a new/upgraded fuel pump?
- What's the fuel pressure set at?
- What octane fuel are you running?
I suspect that either the car is knocking bad enough that the ECM is pulling back timing and boost (the KB chip is pretty aggressive in timing, from what I remember), or you are leaning out enough to cause the same affect (which would be likely if the car has the original fuel pump and/or too low fuel pressure). |
Craig Powell (Cpowell) | Thursday, June 28, 2001 - 10:05 am I agree with Ken. I think you need to do some checking before buying another chip. I have and old KB hi/lo pro chip (from 1991). I ran that chip for several years with great success. I did run 104 octane boost with 93 super unleaded or a 50/50 mix of 100 unleaded and 93 super unleaded when racing my car. I think that chip was step up to run aprox. 19psi in 1st, 18 in 2nd, and 17 in 3rd. Craig |
eric smith (Erock1971) | Thursday, June 28, 2001 - 02:22 pm tnx all, I only have 1 pass with scantool .I had borrowd it I will own 1 by monday morning (by the way I"m looking for a scan tool that will tell all diognose anything possible ) and when i did I was rich the whole time I am running 94 octain with 104 octain booster I am getting 30 fuel pressure psi at idle thats all I know right now i,m still looking for a laptop that I can afford I had just spent a couple a grand last week mostly in the car so$ is a little tight for a week , stok pump stock regulater it was 92 degrees and very humid but it cooled down in the eavning and it still went 95 mph it pulles strong through 1st and second all the time its only when it hits 3rd gear the boost drops. Weird thing is last year it only had 15 psi in 1st 2nd and 12 in 3rd and I did not do anything I had found a vacume leak, fixed it and it stbled the boost but its more then last year in 1 and 2 but thats ok with me I dont think im detonating ive heard it in the past before the sensor caught it so I dont think it is. sorry I dont have more info I will after monday when I get a scan tool and a laptop any info on whats good would be appreciated thnx for all the info Ken, Jay and greg |
Ken Mosher (Kenmosher) | Thursday, June 28, 2001 - 02:33 pm Look for O2 values to be in the 750-800 mv range at WOT, notice what the spark retard is, and also take note of the ESC counts. 30psi of fuel pressure is WAY low, if you are talking about with the vacuum line off. A good starting point is 43-45 psi with vacuum line off. Final thing, the stock pump isn't going to cut it ... probably pretty tired and they were marginal when the cars were new... |
Craig Powell (Cpowell) | Friday, June 29, 2001 - 06:02 am I would also verify your tubing to your boost gauge is good and not cracked or kinked. A few years ago my boost gauge was acting weird. I thought I had some real problems with something but it turned out to be a crack in the plastic tubing. I changed the tubing and the boost gauge works great. Craig |
David Huinker (Turbodave) | Friday, June 29, 2001 - 06:42 am Even with the vacuum line ON, 30# is still way low, that would yield about 37# with the line off (assuming good vacuum with no leaks). That's even low for a stock fuel pressure regulator. If you have an adjustable FPR, then you might want to add about 4-5 more pounds of fuel pressure for a start. TurboDave |
eric smith (Erock1971) | Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 12:31 am ok I went to red armstrongs house! hehe ( cool! bye the way,I met his wife Jane, she is COOL good people) I got a pump , regulater, and a chip. I came home installed the chip and regulater ( bye the way I was getting 37 psi vac off with old reg) , ,, sett it at 43 works great 3rd gear no longer has the drop, i get 15 psi instead of 17 witch I will fix when I get a adjustable waistgate I have a crack in my header (of course) and it is ALITTLE SLOW TO BOOST I also bought a direct scan but still need a laptop tnx for all your help I'll be working on it cya |
