Our listing at http://www.gnttype.org/numbers/8485pn.html shows 25526449 to be the 84/85 module. Unfortunately, I found that also listed to be the 86/87 module, so something is wrong. We'll have to fix that.

The 44W parts book shows 25518358 (Group 2.383) to be the right number. Don't see the number you cited for any TR application of any year.

The 25521351 module is just what I had on my car and also the module that I think was original on the car had that number also. It looks like the 25518358 is an $800 module - ouch. The 25526449 must be the 84/85 module.

Mine is an '87.
I don't know what kind of car the module that I had on my car came off of but I just noticed that is was the same pn as my original (25521351). It worked good - for awhile. Now I am having problems again.
I just noticed in the archives that 25518358 is actually the type II module. Didn't know it was so expensive.

So is it safe to assume that i can use the 25521351 in my 87 and thats what it is from? What would happen if i put an 85 module in a 87? Thanks again

The '351 should do you fine.
Some of the pin assignments are different for the 84/85 modules.

Ok guys, I'll tell you what I've learned recently. The coil # is 25533542 for 84-87. The website listed part # 25526449 for the 84-85. Now if you try to use that part#, a parts guy will tell you that number crossreferences to another number, which ends up being the part number for an 86-87. Which we know won't work on an 84-85 without an adapter. Now that was with guys at GM, and your local autoparts stores. The module # I found for the 86 module was 16022614, and 87 is 16051654. I don't think either of those work, but something like D1996 does. Finally I asked the GM guy to look up the module for an 84-85 GN/TR with the 3.8 turbo engine (vin 9 I believe) and he came up with 25518358. So, from what I was told/shown, that number (25518358) is for the 84-85, and I don't think they used the series II coil then, but could be wrong about that. That module was expensive though, something like $400-500. So the cost of the adapter to use the 86-87 module seems well worth it. An 84-85 module in an 86-87 and an 86-87 module in an 84-85 won't work. The car won't do anything. As Mike said, the pinouts are different, and that's why you need an adapter. I think an 86-87 module is about $150, not real sure on that though.
Scott

Anthony Romano asked:
"Hey Mike, what kind of problems are you having with your module? "
Well, since you asked...
(long story follows, followed by even longer story, followed by some questions)
bad, bad, horrible problems.
I think I have had about 3 modules that are all bad (2 autozones, 1 GM). The car won't rev past 3500rpm now with the GM module and dies and won't restart sometimes with the Autozone module (but it still tests fine on their machine - I think I am going to make my own tester where I can actually heat the module up and put a decent size load on it - simulate actual conditions better)

[longer story]
I had the original (I think) module fail about two years ago and shorted out the coil pack. I bought a new module from autozone (bad mistake) and also "borrowed" a good used GM module and a couple of coil packs from school (that is why I pay to go here, right?) I mostly used the autozone one cause it was new and it was mostly fine - until I got on the highway. Under a constant speed, rpm the car would cut our, buck, pop and all sorts of nasty stuff. But if the speed was kept lower - it would be fine. I went through everything (it can't be the "new" module) then I heard of some other people having problems with the autozone unit. So I switched to the spare GM module and that fixed the problem and the car has been running good for the last year. Two weeks ago I was on the highway and the car starts acting up like it did with the autozone module (no not this again) pull off the road and inspect and I noticed a couple of wires were arcing - replaced them got back on the road same thing. Pulled into a rest area and switch out to the old autozone module and spare coil pack (always carry these items in trunk - and the tools to replace them). The problem was now a little worse. Stopped for the night, went to autozone to exchange for another new module. This one worked worse of all - but still mostly intermitten type failures, some hard failures though. Beginning to doubt that it is the module at this point.
{I guess it is too long to post in one message}

{the story continues}

Put the GM one back on still doing it. Next day, drove for a distance and speed to check it out before tying to limp it home and it seems fine - odd. Got on the highway back home for about 2 hours then it hard failed and left me stranded. Switch the modules again (man I am getting good at this- even with cars rushing by at 75 mph!) car ran, got off the highway (close to home) shut the car off at a gas station won't restart. Swith back to the GM module one more time car runs and I got it home. Now with the GM module installed the car won't rev past 3500 rpm. It feels like hitting a wall. Valvesprings are 30,000 miles old. Autozone module now fails almost immediatly but still tests good and will run the car for a little while.

Can just the module not let the car rev?

Can I really have had 3 bad modules?

What is the real part number for the '87 module?

What kind of plug adapter is required for the Type II conversion - or do you just cut it off the donor car?

Anyone got a known good spare they want to let me try out?

Anybody with a TR anywhere near me (carbondale, IL)?

I didn't know the "Coil Pack tester" also tested the modules - I have never seen one.

Well I have some clarification on the part numbers. The original discussion started out about a part number 25521351 - this is not a valid part number but it is a casting number. It refers to Ign. Module part number 24503624 and that one works. This is the Magnavox Module. Wasn't there also a delco module that came on some cars. The dealer couldn't find that one. This one lists for $250.
From the dealer I got 12353801 for the coil pack - this is different from what Scott P. listed above and the part number list.

The numbers Scott P. listed for the modules are actually the ESC module and not the Ign. Module and those are listed on the pn page.

Hope that clears some things up. It is kind of wierd that they would stamp a casting number, that looks very much like a part number, on the bottom of the Ign. Module.

Thanks Mike. I never was sure about the numbers I found for the module, I found them in a book and wasn't sure of which module they were, but that's why I said I wasn't sure. The ignition coils for the 84-87 cars is part number 25533542. The 86/87 ignition part number that I have found is 25526449, which appears to be the delco module Mike said his dealer couldn't find. That number I *believe* is cross referenced to a weird number like D1996. The 84/85 ignition module part number is 25518358. I looked on the website at the Series II swap and they list part number 10456478 for the series II module. The 84/85 ignition module is expensive, like I said I just took a quick glance at the price and they listed one in the $400 range and another in the $500 range, one cost, one list. I'm not sure of the 25521351 part number you have found. But I believe what Mike has said is that that number is the casting number that goes with or on a Magnavox Module, which is part number 24503624, according to what Mike found. So, the 25521351(Magnavox...from what Mike said) and the 25526449(Delco..guessing though) numbers are for 86/87 cars. The 84/85 ignition module part number is 25518358.

The coils are different for 84-85 and 86-87:

84-85 coil - 25518356
86-87 coil - 25533542

The modules are also different:

84-85 module - 25518358
86-87 module - 25526449

The numbers above are from the 44W book and may be superceeded, but I've never seen some of the numbers being mentioned here. However, the 84-85 and 86-87 coils are most definitely NOT the same.

For what its worth, the bottom of my original 86-87 module (now fried) has 25521351 stamped on it. However, this does NOT appear to be the part number. Same for my original coil, which has 369062-1 stamped on its underside. That's not its part number.

I think 25526449 has been superceeded by 24503624. I will ask if I go back to the dealer.
Also the number given for the coil on the 86/87 25533542, is stamped on the bottom of my coil - could this be a casting number also. The dealer gave me 12353801, that refers to a coil kit. I don't know what that contains. Or maybe this is another superceeded number.
At least the gasket number is still 25526450.

When I went to the dealer and gave them the 25526440 number I believe they told me it's been superceeded, but the number he mumbled was D1996. About the coils though, the website has 25533542 listed for the coil on both the 86/87 page and the 84/85 page. Also, that friend of mine with the 85 GN, he got a new coil (don't know the number he used/got, but I showed him my list of part numbers and I *think* he said he used the number I had listed for the coil, 2553342), and while it definitely looked different than his old one, it was smaller. Both shorter (top to bottom) and shorter (end to end). It wouldn't fit on the old module. But when we plugged it all in, it fired right up and works just fine. Course he still has a hesitation problem that's been there for about 8 months, but that's another topic.:) Why would the coil need to be different? I thought all it did was fire when directed to by the module? Aren't part numbers fun? :)
