I am considering a new TE-44. In looking over the newly updated "turbocharger specs" section (thanks Charles Brooks) I see the TE-44 listed in the Limit section at 475 hp, 2600 stall, 36# injectors. The specs from PTE list 580 hp, 2700 stall, 42.5# injectors.

Are these TE-44's really that different? Is the PTE Exhaust housing making the extra 105 hp? That would be an awful lot. Is the PTE unit even spec'd with their exh housing or the Garrett housing? It doesn't state which. Or are the differences in how the specs are written? Is John Craig just using more conservative specs? (ie different boost levels maybe) Doesn't the airflow capability determine the hp and fuel guidelines? What is the boost pressure these #'s are taken at? Any experience out there with largely different power capabilities from these 2 turbos? Isn't the TE-44 designation some sort of "standard" for making a comprable pump? I notice the TA-49 is 100 hp lower in the Limit specs, however the TE-60 is only 10 hp difference between Limit and PTE.

Just when I thought I was getting a handle on these turbos, I see that I'm still quite confused.

Comments appreciated. Thanks, Joe

HB,

I really think that PTE and LE are recommending the injector that will match the turbo best. To me this implies that the Limit version flows less air than the PTE version, therefore it requires smaller injectors to match / supply their unit. 42.5# injectors support ~520hp @ 100%dc, 36# support ~435hp @ 100%dc per my Joe Lubrant TRX chart;) So it appears neither will run 580 hp without alcohol or other additional fuel. Would need 50#'ers rated @ ~600hp, 100%dc. This implies you're probably not going to achieve this "max rating" anyway. I digress....

I am trying to determine if they rate and build them using the same methods(PTE and LE), or where the whopping 105 hp difference is coming from. All you Limit te 44 guys...are you getting whomped by the PTE 44 guys? I never heard of this. IS all this due to the PTE EXH housing? Is this a REAL difference or only an "on paper" difference.

Thanks for the comment, Joe Doino

I think the difference is the size of the injectors. 36#ers will not supply
as much fuel as 50# ers will at the same duty cycle. The question becomes
will a TE 44 provide enough air to support running the larger injector at
100% duty cycle to make 580HP.

The PTE specs for the TE44 seem to be confused. My guess is that is an oversight on PTE's part.

A TE44 is a Roughly equivalent to a TA49 on a turbo regal. The TE44 Compressor may be slightly more efficient at boost levels of 24 and up but we are talking a 10 hp difference at most. A limit Eng TE44 and PTE44 will basically flow the same, because you can get a PTE turbine housing from limit, making it virtually the same turbo.

36# fuel injectors are well matched to a TA49/TE44 until you port the heads, run more than 23 psi of boost or are running high to mid 11's at over 115 mph in the 1/4 mile.

Hope this helps
