I'm removing my stock exhaust system to replace it with an ATR. The system only has 12k miles and I'd like to keep it in good shape just in case I put the car back to factory stock condition some day. My problem is, the pipes do not want to separate where they are fitted together just before the axle. Does anyone know how to get these pipes apart?

Thanks,
Sean - 87 GN

Would you ever consider selling the stock system you're removing? I may be interested if it's in good shape and the price is right.

I just cut mine apart when I removed it (years ago) so I really can't help you. Maybe a ton of liquid wrench and alot of time to soak will help.

you need to go to an auto repair or muffler shop and have the pipes heated so they can be removed. what I would do is have them take the old exhaust unit out and install the new atr exhaust. make sure to tell them ahead of time that you want to keep the old exhaust with out cutting it into pieces.

godd luck, MARIO

Well, I decided to tackle it myself and got the back half of the system off. Does anyone know the best way to get the cat off? I'm thinking of just taking the stock downpipe off. If I do, do I loosen the two spring loaded bolts just after the elbow to get the downpipe off?

You can do that. What I've done in the past cut the down pipe at the cat with a hacksaw. I purchased an extra down pipe to replace the one I
hacked. At a later date would have muffler shop weld the cut downpipe back together.
