Does anyone here have a stock air cleaner in their 87 GN? I was looking at mine to clean / replace and am having a hell of a time figuring out how to get it out. It is in a rectangular box mounted centered behind the grill in front of the radiator. The connecting hose up to the MAF
is on the drivers side of the box, and the air filter is partially exposed and appears to be cylindrical & spongy grey. The screws for it are mostly inaccesable. Is this a stock setup ?
It looks like the whole box will have to somehow come out, if it will without removing the grill.

Does this ring a bell with anyone ? I read a post
further down, but it sounds like a different setup. Also, where can i get some hose from the filter to the MAF sensor. I noticed mine was torn :(

Regards,

Dave

This sounds like a early ATR piece. What you need to do is remove the plastic air dams under the front bumper. There may also be an aluminum scoop under there too. The air filter housing is probably attached to the top of the plastic air dams with stainless screws and lock nuts. Undo the clamp that holds the hose to the filter housing. Then take filter housing out thru the bottom. The housing comes apart so you can clean the foam filter. Be sure to use foam filter oil, not the K&N oil.

Thanks Jeff, I think you are right from what I can see. There is an aluminum scoop under there as you suspected. Sorry if I sound ignorant but what does "ATR" mean ?

Applied Technologies and Research = ATR. They were one of the first turbo buick vendors in the late 80's. They were originally based in Goleta, CA (near Santa Barbara); then Roseville, CA (near Sacramento) and are currently based in Fair Play, SC. Their site is www.atrperformance.com and their phone number is on gnntype.org under the vendors list. No, this is not a shameless plug for them.
