Thursday, August 22, 2002 - 03:26 pm I am going to buy injectors, a turbo, and a 3in. THDP. Since i am only trying to get the car to run 12.00-12.20's I thought my best bet would be to get a TA49 turbo with 36# Blue Tops. However, when I went to order the injectors, turbo, and DP today the vendor (a reputable one from our list)told me that he would not reccomend blue tops to anyone. he said they are too expensive and i would be better off with 43# 009's. Q1). Are 009's way overkill for my goal or can i get the same or better results with them? Q2). Is there really any difference in the spray pattern between the Disc type injectors and the pintle style? or is this just a myth? Fuel delivery to the injectors is not an issue, i have a XP pump w/hotwire kit and an adj.FP reg. already. Thanks Bill Ritter,19

Friday, August 23, 2002 - 10:34 am Q1) 009s can work, it's all in the chip. As long as you flow enough air to need the fuel, you shouldn't have too much trouble dialing them in. Q2) There is a difference spray pattern (I've seen it on a flow bench). Whether it makes a hill of beans worth of difference is up for debate. Maybe for emissions or cold driveability it does? However, I haven't really seen anybody really claim superior performance for one vs. the other (except for the fact that the disc style is usually considered "self cleaning").

Friday, August 23, 2002 - 11:50 am Ken is right. The injector spray shape should be a cone. The cone size at the inlet valve should be the diameter of the valve and should not deposit any fuel on the walls of the port. Injector targeting is key. In 86-87, we weren't very good at it. Targeting is why the ports on the Chevy LS1-LS6 are so tall and skinny. To help prevent deposition of fuel on the port walls, don't polish them to a mirror finish. You do want to take the corebox parting lines off and also any bumps. To get the ideal finish, leave the tiny casting crators. The eddy currents, caused by the orange peel finish, actually help air flow. For emission quality, swirl and tumble are determined by the short turn radius and the shape of the bowl. The throat machining and multi-angle seat cut are also big contributors to both flow and emissions.
