Stock injectors are fine until you get the car down in the 12s.

Many more effective mods first ...

And ... yes ... you need another chip if you get new injectors.

I have heard that they should be replaced at 60K miles. Of course, 15 years is good too.

racetronix has good specials.

I think that 009's would be good. I have them with my stock set up.

You will also need an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. You should also upgrade your fuel pump.

Well, don't know about the 60K thing, but if they flow OK and pass a pressure test, there's no real reason to replace them just yet.

I agree wholeheartedly with Shawn that a fuel pump is a MUST. Get a good intank pump, hot wire it and get an adjustable fuel regulator. There are a good foundation for anything you do later ...

Stock injectors on an otherwise stock car are just fine. Mine carried me down to 12.20s. Unless you've got your sights set below mid to low 12s, I wouldn't worry about injectors. I would take the tip to upgrade the fuel pump, AND upgrade its wiring before you go cranking on that wastegate.

If you do have larger injectors, you will need an appropriate chip. Except for perhaps the 30 lb/hr 'green stripe' Tomco/Lucas units, which seem close enough to the 28 lb/hr stock Bosch units to work with the same chips.

Ken & Scott,

What "effective" mods would you guys recommend after doing Fuel Pump & Hotwire, Ajustable FPR & WG, Cold Air and Hooker Cat back ?

I've moved this out of 'Engine Mechanicals', since the chat was never really about engine mechanicals anyway.

Since the 'what's next' question comes up constantly, some good buildup "recipe" guidelines can be found at http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/recipes/recipepage.html

Just pick how far you want to go and read along. I'd also highly suggest some sort of scan tool, as well as a fuel pressure gage, and an aftermarket boost gauge. Without these tools, you can't tune effectively, no matter what parts you throw at it.

Scott.

How many miles and how many years were on your stock injectors when you went 12.2's?

I am asking becuase I am putting together a list of "must upgrade" items for my clubs website and injectors was near the top of the list.

TIA

Its been several years, so I'd have to check to be exactly sure. They did have approximately 60-64k miles on them. However, to be fair, I had removed them at some point to clean and flow them. Probably after 45-50k.

IMHO, the stock injectors really are fine for a basically stock car. Like any parts on a 15 year old car you plan on pushing hard, its well worth checking them out before running them hard. But I'm not sure that 'bigger is better' here.

Thanks Scott.

I wasn't really pursuing "bigger", but "newer, with room to grow".

I replaced my stock injectors at 95K miles and 15 years. I THOUGHT that my car ran great before. Boy was I wrong. When I replaced my injectors, it was like I had bought a brand new car. Completely different ride.

What is the pressure rating of a stock injector? I just picked up an 86 GN from the original owner and it runs like total crap. All signs point to injectors, which have never been replaced and the car has 150K. Guess the need replacing. Any suggestions?

Abnir, those are definitely 009's you're going to need a chip made especially for those injectors in order for your car to run right..
