mike reuling (Cheeops) | Friday, July 11, 2003 - 03:21 pm i have an 87 GN in the shop now gettin the engin rebuilt. It has the stock turbo with a 3 bold 3 inch down pipe ( i don't know what kind it is). i just got a new TE61 for it, i want to know if i can use the old wastegate and if it will bolt up to the down pipe thats on the car already i just started tinkering with the car after a year of saving, i,m only 21, and don't know a whole hell of a lot about the in's and outs of aftermarket parts, any help would be awsomem |
Shawn (Jsta6) | Friday, July 11, 2003 - 03:35 pm Yes you can, IF it is adjustable. The TE turbos have a different housing, so the stock style waste gates will not directly bolt up. You REALLY want to buy a heavy duty waste gate. New, they are like $125 or something. I bought mine used off of another board member for $40. To use your stocker, you will need to either weld it on to a "TE" style bracket, or as a temporary measure, you can use a large washer to hold the one bolt on that does not line up correctly. Sorry I don't have any pics. I know it will be almost impossible to imagine this. lol. You will see what I mean if you try it... Best bet is to buy a "TE" style wastegate. |

Scott Przybysz (Priz) | Friday, July 11, 2003 - 10:12 pm Mike I recommend you read every page of this website....twice.;) There is an amazing amount of info here on the site. You really want to learn as much about your car as you can so you can tune it. Not to mention if you always have someone else work on it, you'll be at their mercy and so will your GN. This especially comes in when you have a small problem, if you do the work and you know all the parts it can be MUCH easier to troubleshoot and fix. I hope you have gotten new injectors and a chip to go with that turbo. Fuel pump upgraded and hotwired too? Scantool? |
mike reuling (Cheeops) | Saturday, July 12, 2003 - 10:14 am it already has a chip in it (thrasher) and the injectors (46lb) are on the way, and am saving for the punmp and 2500 stall. and about the work on my car the engin rebuild is the only thing i'm having done, after this i'm doin all the wrenching, i was just intimadated about opening up the bottem end plus i really don't have the equiptment to do that (it's a jasper stage 2 rebuild) p.s. i've been reading like a mo fo for months on this site |
Scott Przybysz (Priz) | Saturday, July 12, 2003 - 10:50 am Just make sure the chip matches the injectors. I'm pretty sure they make a variety of Thrasher chips, so just make sure. I'd get a hot wire kit for the pump too. And you've already got an adjustable fuel pressure regulator? Just making sure you've got the basics.;) And I know how it is when you make up a list of parts you want, sometimes you forget the smaller ones, then only to realize it after you've spent all your cash on the big, cool parts. I understand completely about the engine rebuild. There was a time when I had most of the equipment and just had to send out for machining, but not any more. It sounds as though you are well on your way grasshopper.;) Good luck. |
