Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 03:54 pm What is XYLENE? Where can I get some if I think I need it? How do you use? Will it hurt my car? Does it work?

Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 09:00 pm Xylene, in simple terms, paint thinner. I used to get mine from Scherwin Williams (paint store). For some "Homebrew Recipes", see: http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/misc/octanebooster.html If your expectations are too high, yes, you can hurt your car. This ain't rage gas, just octane booster. Some have cautioned about it freeing up gunk in the fuel system and causing clogs, but that hasn't been my experience, and I have used ~50 gallons of it through my car. Doing some back to back testing with ~100 octane Xylene brew vs. Unocal 100 unleaded, I achieved similar results... I could push it a bit harder with the Unocal. It is a fabulous injector cleaner to boot! :-) Dean

Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 09:47 pm Cool, Thank you. Great link! I was meaning to use xylene as a fuel system cleaner. I dont want to boost my stock GN b4 I get it prepared. This may help, I changed my fuel filter and I had these very small black particles that flowed out when I shook and drained out the fuel filter onto my hand. Any comments? How can I clean my fuel system right now to get me by until next spring?

Sunday, September 21, 2003 - 12:09 am Thanx Dean! I was a little worried for a minute about the particles. I'm droppin' the xylene idea...I'm just going to worry about the fuel system next spring...my cars fast, theres nothing wrong with it, I dont need to mess with it "to get me by till next spring". I was going to change the fuel pump, hotwire kit...you know, just upgrade the system next spring.
