1st I would like to thank Ken, you do an exelant job. looks like alot of work, anyway I'm going to puchase a new exaust system I had 1 made but its a hack job, in my book anyway, 2 and a halfs stareting with test tube to the stock Y then to flowmasters back to 2 and a half with tails that are kinked over the axil. So i figured I have room to expand, I have to favor the quit end of the give or take I will sacrifice horses for stealth silence ( to an extent) I dont mind a little rumble. What system do you think I should go with tnx cya erock1971 eric smith

My suggestions is to look into a system that uses UltraFlow mufflers ... it's amazing how quiet they are. 2.5" duals are, on the whole a lot quieter than the 3" single shot type systems and they flow similarly. Look for mandrel bent good quality stainless piping.

There are a few choices out there that fit the bill, to some extent or another.... the Hooker replacmeent system is cheap (~$300), and flows/sounds nice with the Aerochamber mufflers (same idea as the Ultraflows). It's only draw back is that it's mild steel, not stainless.

ATR's systems are all stainless, but you have to specify the stainless mufflers .. the mild steel ones are louder for some reason (maybe the material resonants more?).

I have the ATR 2.5" system with Ultraflows and love how quiet and drone free they are. Another word of caution... turbo size, headers, downpipe, test pipe all affect resonance and sound.

A few people have had good results by putting a straight through muffler (like a round Ultraflow or similar shorty bullet muffler) where the test pipe/cat goes and using a cat back system. This seems to tame some of the noise.

Just my .02$, My mostly stock '86 GN had 2.5" exhaust, no cat and Walker Dynomax Race Magnums. It was stolen and 2 yrs later I bought my '87 GN and it has a 3" system w/ dual Flowmasters. I DESPISE the Flowmasters and Loved the Race Magnums. The RM's were a straight through design that were very quiet (except when you pressed on the LOUD pedal). That's the way I like it. The FM's will go in the trash can before long, they may be some people's idea of cool but not mine!

How would you guys rate the performance of an
dynomax dual exhaust vs. lets say a ATR hooker cat back stainless steel unit. Is the $300 difference worth spending for a ATR system instead of a dynomax or flowmaster....Thanks

ATR and Hooker are not the same systems. And I don't believe Hooker makes a stainless system.

The ATR pieces are T304 stainless and will probably last longer than the car. Plus, all bends are mandrel with no loss of volume in these areas. Basically, something like the ATR system is the last exhaust you'll ever buy for your TR.

On an otherwise stock TR, the flow improvement probably won't be that great. So I wouldn't think of it as an extra $300 spent for extra HP. Its just a matter of what sort of quality you're looking for. This is one case where you definitely get what you pay for.
