Saturday, November 22, 2003 - 10:38 pm what kinda power is a 3' downpipe for? which brand? what good is a hotwire to the fuel pump? is there an open cone intake on the market? thanks

Saturday, November 22, 2003 - 11:03 pm also what scantool is good?

Monday, November 24, 2003 - 08:34 am The downpipe is a "combination" type of part. Once you have the other basic stuff done, the downpipe can help the combination breath better. Like everything else on these cars, it comes down to the combination ... if the car needs the 3", then it can be worth a tenth or a tenth and a half (in my experience). The hot wiring the pump ensures adequate voltage to the fuel pump. The fuel pump volume is directly proportional to voltage, so it is critical to have good voltage to the pump. That's why one of the most important modifications to these cars is a new fuel pump (since the OEM pump was marginal even new and definitely gets worse with age). As far as scantools goe, there are several good choices, including the ScanMaster, TurboLink and DirectScan. Take a look here for a run down of the basics of each: http://www.appauto.com/tlink/scanchart.html

Monday, November 24, 2003 - 02:50 pm Ken, With the 86/87 GN is there a modification that can be done to the stock ECM in order for the OTC 2000/4000 to display more than one frame per 1.25 seconds? Thank you.

Monday, November 24, 2003 - 03:36 pm Nope ... that's the ECM, not the software/hardware's limitation. ScanMaster chips do a neat little trick to reuse data inside a frame multiple times ... which appears faster (it's the same rate). However, TurboLink and ScanMaster are the only ones that can interpret that datastream.

Tuesday, November 25, 2003 - 06:39 am Ken, One last question…does anyone manufacture a real-time knock gauge that displays the degrees of knock in a numeric value not with LEDs?
| |
Tuesday, November 25, 2003 - 09:48 am Not to my knowledge. The degrees of retard is something the ECM calculates based on multiple inputs (including the knock sensor), so it isn't something that a guage could easily display without some sort of data hook up to the ECM.
