tyson short (Tyson) | Friday, December 12, 2003 - 04:40 pm I have a 87 GN. I have owned for a few years now and it never registered very much boost. I just figured it was the stock gauge. I installed a VDO and it will not get higher than 10 pounds. I got to looking and there is no vacuum lines hooking to the wastegate solenoid. Am I wrong?Isn't there suppose to be? I have looked in postons and they sell a 3 piece hose kit and tee. So I assume there should be something. I can not figure out where it is suppose to hook. Would someone have by passed it? Thanks |
Fred Ziegler (Fastfreddie) | Friday, December 12, 2003 - 07:16 pm My guess is that the line from the turbo is hooked directly to the wastegate with no "Y" in it, correct? That's an old racer trick, I've done it myself to get rock steady boost. You can remedy this one of two ways. You can simply make the wastegate rod adjustable and tighten it up a turn or two. Be careful, because I've found the adjustment isn't linear, that is the first turn might raise the boost a pound or so, but as the rod gets tighter the boost increases more with each turn, so that one turn might equal three pounds or more. If you want the stock setup, you'll need the "Y" and the hoses like Postons sells. They should have directions on which way the Y goes in, I'm not positive, so I can't tell you for sure. tyson short (Tyson) | Friday, December 12, 2003 - 08:11 pm Fred, you are exactly right. I am planning on going to a adjustable gate anyways. Do you think this( bypass solenoid) would have anything to do with my low boost? Or do you think my wastegate or something else is warn out. The car has 115k on it. Thanks a lot,Tyson |
Fred Ziegler (Fastfreddie) | Friday, December 12, 2003 - 11:01 pm Tom Prucha posted this on the list: I think it should make about 11 or 12 lbs this way, if the wastegate is stock, as this is about as low as the chip can take the boost when the boost tables are zeroed out, if I recall correctly. If you just want higher boost you can add a few "throttle return" style springs across the wastegate, from the ring around the actuator diaphragm to the lever on the wastegate, as a quick fix until you get your adjustable wastegate. Be advised that you will have no ECM controlled boost retard for 3rd and 4th gear, or during knock, until the solenoid is put back into the vacuum circuit. Tom Tom is correct about the boost retard. It will stay at full boost no matter what without the solenoid in place. Your gauge may be a pound or two off, like Tom says it should be about 11 or 12 stock. I'd say your setup is working correctly the way it's put together now. If you want the safety of boost retard from detonation, I'd get the correct hoses and install them. You can still do the adjustable wastegate, you'll just have that saftey factor in place. Fast Freddie |
