Starting in August they have lowered the octane rating for premium petrol throughout California to 91 (!!!). 92 was about a bare minimum for my 87 GN running at 16 psi. I ran my 1st tank on 91 and it detonated a bit as I thought it might. It got much better as the car retimed itself. But now I'm still thinking it's better off with more octane. Would one of the paint-thinners mentioned on this page work well? or maybe alcohol injection? I only have intentions for street driving right now, would these additives work well on a long term basis? A performance increase would be great, but I don't want to sacrifice
longevity.
Thanks for any help.

I use xylene and have no problems with it.Yopu can use it at up tp a 30% mixture of gas.In other words if you put 6 gallons of gas in you can use 2 gallons of xylene.I also use 2 ounces of automatic transmission fluid for each gallon of xylene for lubrication. To figure out the octane multiply 91x6 then take 117x2(117 is the octane of xylene)and divide 780 by 234 and you will have your octane. As you can see it is a little better than 97 now.Bruce

Are there any problems with Xylene? Where do you get that btw. I would think the alcohol is a safer way to go as it not only adds octane to your fuel but helps cool everything as well. For around $300 and an increase of 3 to 4 pounds of boost I dont think you can beat it.
