I have a stock '87 GN with 50K on the odometer. under hard acceleration when it shifts form 1st to 2nd it pings for just a split second but I can hear it in the cab. what is the cauls of the ping and how do I make it go away.

DEFECTIVE COIL OR MODULE
BAD FUEL PRESSURE REG
PLUG WIRES
IAC CLOGGED AND PASSAGE WAYS

Idle Air Control

The solenoid in the front of the throttle body with the connector on it.....justbehind/below the pipe or hose from the maf to the turbo.

It meters airflow and adjusts for engine load at idle to keep everything on an even keel.
