Hey guys. I have a stock 87 t-type, and I recently got a hole in the muffler which made it louder than all hell. I wanted to simply replace it, but I got qouted at over $500 and I know you can get exhaust for much cheaper than that. Well, I searched around I found a flowmaster unit for $228. Is this an OK exhaust system? I am not trying to make a street rod or anything. I just wanted something cheap that will make it a little less noisy that it is now(I actually wear earplugs when I drive.)

Here is where I got it.

I think the pipes are 3.5" inches which seems HUGE. I just hope it makes it quiter than it is now. Let me know what you think, or have heard about this system. Thanks
Andy

Most guys today are using the dual from the cat back. Check the dia. of the pipe most stock replacement systems are 2&1/4 or 2&1/2.I had the
flowmaster system back in early 90's and it was a
little louder than stock. If the system you have is stock dimesions you can always install the
stock muff. at a later date

Depends on what you want ... the Flowmaster system tends to drone quite a bit. If you go with the Hooker system (about the same price) you should be able to avoid the dreaded "drone" and have a nice performing system.

If you decide to spend $500+, get the stainless steel systems offered.

after the exhaust tips rotted from the muffler, I went to a flowmaster exhaust-single from cat then to the y and dual in, dual out; like the original exhaust. just my opinion, but I like the drone of the 'flows', no one ever suspects a quiet car to be fast...sleeeper!

Will it be ok to run a 3 inch dual from cat with
flowmaster mufflers? Keep in mind I will run a 3 inch down pipe. The whole system will be 3 inch.

Andy, the Hooker exhaust system from Summit is very popular, & is very common on our TR's. It is aluminized. It's around $250 complete. If you do not want to spend the extra $$ on stainless, you won't find a better system for the $$. Good luck.

Honestly, I'd ask myself, can one 3 inch pipe fill two three inch pipes? I'm using a 3 inch dp and dual 2 3/4 out the back which may be a little overkill, but I'd say dual 3 inch is definitely overkill, maybe go with a single 3 inch into the muffler, then split into two tail pipes.

The Hooker system is a good system for a mandrel bent mild steel kit.

Depending on the mufflers you are using, it will definitely be a deeper and slightly louder than stock sound. Hopefully you won't get the dreaded 2000 RPM drone (a function of mufflers, mostly).

You should see a slightly increase in boost from the reduced backpressure. The system is definitely good for performance.

Some of us believe that Flowmasters do not work as well on turbo cars as the straight thru type of muffler such as the Walker UltraFlos or the Hooker MaxFlos.

Exhaust sound has a lot to do with the engine combination. The longer the cam duration, the nastier the exhaust sound imo.

The turbo mufflers like the Walker Dynomaxs drone terribly on most cars at 2000 rpm if the cat is removed.

The UltraFlows and Maxiflows have very little drone to them but they are a bit louder in normal driving-not very loud, tho.

Larger systems like the 2 3/4" or 3" systems are louder.

As mentioned above, the Hooker mild steel 2 1/2" system is very difficult to beat for the price. It used to come with Dynomaxes but now it can be had with better mufflers. Some of the vendors sell a 2 3/4" mild steel system for a reasonable price as well.
