I get 8-9 degrees of knock shifting into 4th.

Until that time I have little or no knock.

Any ideas as to why this is occuring?

Try adjusting your rod a half turn out and see if
that help.Sound like too much boost or not enough
fuel pressure.

Each time the car upshifts a gear, more load is placed on the engine. Detonation is more likely to be incurred with increased load. Most likely you need to reduce the boost a bit. As suggested above, you may be running low on fuel delivery as well.
