My car keeps getting too hot, i have an 84 GN, it has a 160 thermostat but when i goaround the block a couple times it heats up to 210 and i stop before it gets any hotter. the previous owner installed an electric fan on it which seems to work fine. What could cause this? Another question would be , how do you control boost? is the wastegate arm the only way because i have too much boost

If it is heating up that quickly it sounds like the thermostat isn't opening. Did you check it?

Thermostat may not be opening. Try changing that. Radiator may be plugged, look inside the tank to see if it is getting good flow. Open the cap when it is cold. Start the car and let it get to operating temperature. If you see good flow, then that is not the radiator. Also if you feel the top hose, and it is not real hot, then that is an indication of a bad T-stat. Also, check the direction of the fan. The fan should be drawing cold air into the engine compartment. If it is going in the wrong direction, then it will only hold the hot air in the radiator, and will not let it do it's job. Some fans are reversible, and if it was added, it is possible that it was wired backwards. Good Luck.

I have installed new thermostats that were bad. The top hose will get hot because the heat from the water outlet migrates up the hose. Check the bottom hose when the top one is hot.If the bottom hose is still cool to the touch it may be a defective thermostat.

I check the thrmostate by putting it in a pan of hot water on the stove and watch it as the water temp increases. Check it with a high temp thermometer.

And let's not forget a good one here, just because it's new, and it works, doesn't mean it will work if we accidentally put it in upside down. :) Haven't done it myself....yet.;)

I think i found the problem, the radiator is all pluged up from the looks of it, and when i took of the cap and let it warm up when i would rev it, water would only trickle out. so I was about to find where i could get it all cleaned out until i was on ebay and found a radiator for $30.00 in the box brand new so i figured just get that. I'll let you know if that solves all the problems it should hopefully.

Richer, try Holm's Radiators for any questions? If the one on eBay does not work out I would try these guys. You may want to think twice before buying a used radiator, you don't know what it's been through and what's been through it (just like your 15 year old radiator). Just my 0.02.
