Tuesday, September 24, 2002 - 04:14 pm I have to replace the exaust on my 85 GN, I was hoping for some advice on the best cat back system to instal, right now the car has a single muffler and I was thinking of putting duals on instead, I would like it to sound better as well as increase performance, is there any gain in going to a bigger size pipe (ie 3") and what muffler gives a good sound. Thanks in advance

Wednesday, September 25, 2002 - 08:37 am Hey Kent... I would definitely suggest eliminating the crossflow muffler setup. When I had the exhaust done on my 85 T-Type [it was done twice in 13 yrs] I had the pipes custom bent from the cat back. No mufflers at all. The first time I had it done with 2-1/4 pipe and the second time with 2-1/2. I really didn't find either very loud or very "droney", though the exhaust tone was very distinctive [family and friends could recognize it when I'd drive up]. The caveat was that I prefer the tailpipes "ala Monte" under the back bumper so the sound isn't dumping on the side of the car, but out the back. I preferred the 2-1/4 though, because the 2-1/2 was just a bit louder. Strictly a personal preference, I think. My 85 also had a Kenne-Bell header set on it, but as I said, still had the cat in place. The performance seemed to show a "seat of the pants" increase from stock to custom but really not from the size increase, though I never raced it or even taken it to the track to check for sure. The custom aluminized pipes were done in Upstate NY, and cost about $200. One of the "bad" things about SoCal is that the exhaust never actually rots away, so one is never "forced" to changed the exhaust. How's that for a plug for the Northeast? NEBRA guys? Wednesday, September 25, 2002 - 11:02 am I have the same system. Have a cat converter about the size of a coffee can and dual straight pipes after the y-pipe. Love the sound, there is a tune in there once you learn to play it Sounds freat at 65 - 70 on the hiway too - just drove from falmouth, ma to pittsburgh, pa and back last week. Car was very happy - as was I... Luck

Thursday, January 30, 2003 - 08:56 pm Hello All, new to the gn game and just would like to know is it possible to run a true dual exhaust on these cars? I would like to cap off the header on the passenger side and eliminate the crossover, run the exhaust right from the headers back, anyone have any advice on this? Thanks

Friday, January 31, 2003 - 08:04 am That would be a bad idea ... the turbo relies on both banks of cylinders to spin the turbine and make boost.

Saturday, February 01, 2003 - 03:39 pm Hello, thanks for the reply Ken, will not try that set up then. If I eliminate the converter with a test pipe will that be okay? I am building a 1985 gn motor and going with stock injectors and turbo for right now. I have rebuilt the motor with std trw pistons, aftermarket crank and had it balanced. I have a inline fuel pump from kenne bell 1/2 inch fuel line and adjustable fuel regulator. I was wondering about a few parts I am getting ready to buy are they good or bad. I have seen a few parts through poston like the gn110t cam kit. I had the heads ported and put severe duty moroso valves in them. I have aftermarket gauges and will go with a ceramic crossover, mandrel bent and aftermarket exhaust. I will be putting it all in a 1983 buick t-type which has the firewall smoothed and no power steering and manual brakes. I also have plenty of little extras like electric fan, tranny cooler etc. I guess what I am asking is does anyone have any other ideas and does any of this sound bad? I have seen a few big mouth air kits for these cars and was wondering what is a good set up and were to get it? Sorry for all the questions but me and my friends really have only played with chevy motors but now I want a quick cruising car, something to enjoy and take trips with, any help would be greatly appreciated....Thanks

Sunday, February 02, 2003 - 04:43 pm my .02 cents......running 84GN, aluminized dual 2 1/2 inch from gutted cat back, double baffled muffler and exit out in stock position. gains....@.3-.4 @ track. yes it is destictive and others will know when you are coming and will know you're there! noise...slight droaning @2000rpm...can be fixed by tcc sitch and NOT locking up convertor around town. good luck. sam

Tuesday, June 10, 2003 - 03:44 pm Kyle, Check out the vendors on this web site. For example, ATR makes a single 3" exhaust w/race muffler but it's stainless steel and rather expensive. In any case, if your car has the orginal catcon, you should consider replacing it with a larger unit. Be prepared to have to adapt componets to make them bolt up if you go this route. Basically, you can do anything you want and can afford. Good luck. Nick
