Does anyone know if an 86/87 T-Type alternator would fit in an 85? I know the pulley would need swapping and the wiring would need to be converted to accept the CS series alternator.

If it won't bolt up, does anyone have any suggestions for increasing alternator output at low engine RPM (idle)?

Thanks,
Raymond

The alternators are different. I know for a fact that they will not excatly bolt up and the wiring is different. I suppose if you wanted to swap them you could. What you would need to do is the 2 wire plug on your original unit has 1 wire that's hot when the key in on and the other that is hot all the time. Use the wire that hot when the key is on and splice that into the "L" terminal on the 86/87 alt. IMO for what you would gain, it would be a hassle and not worth the trouble.

The gain would be (hopefully) enough output at idle so that the alternator will charge at idle. I have tried two 85 alternators with the same results. No charge at idle. Both alternators work just fine at idle in the V8 Rivieras they came from. I did some calculations, and found that at idle the alternator when on the V8 is spinning at 2000 RPM. When at idle on the V6, it is only spinning at 1400 RPM, which apparently isn't fast enough to keep up with the electrical load of the V6, which is inherently greater than the V8 (electric fuel pump, fuel injectors, etc.). The V8 and V6 alternators are both rated the same at 94 amps.
