pertaining to the engine and how it is put together?
i have a hard time locating anything for this car sometimes.
and since your my hot-aired brothers, i figured is hould ask you all .
i was going to order the chilton but i don't know how in depth this book is, cuz i can only order it online.

Helms published the original chassis manuals/service manuals and those are what you want. You may have to check eBay and some of the automobile collectible places, if Helm doesn't have reprints available.

Expect to spend ~$100 (it's about a dollar a pound! :) There's a lot of paper for all of the '85 models).

The Chilton's are pretty much worthless, IMHO. Another thing to try is your local library and look at the National Service manuals. They are usually pretty close to reprints of the factory manuals.

I checked the Helm website for an 84 Service Manual for my car, but no luck. They do have an 85 set, but it is $230!!! The set did include several items so it might be worth it. Also the manual is not specific to a Grand National, but it will definitly have everything for the turbo drivetrain. I have an 87 Service Manual and it is the same way.

I know the 84 and 85 are identical, except that the 85 had a split year for the Hydroboost and Powermaster. I would guess that the 85 set would also include everything for the 84 as well, but that's too expensive right now. The 86 and 87 manuals are only $75. I did not see any of the Parts & Illustration Manuals offered anymore. strange?

I had the intake off my 84 a few times and would be glad to help guide you through memory, and could send pics of my engine if that would help. I'm sure that other Hot-Air owners could also help out here. I have a digital camera so I could easliy e-mail a picture the same day.

I also checked the GM website that someone else offered, and the items available are exactly the same as on the Helm website. GM probably just marks everything up a bit to sell it.

Doug

It sounds like some of the information for the 84/85 cars is hard to come by. Don't forget that if you wish to document parts, procedures, or assemblies, we can certainly host the pictures and any descriptions and instructions on the GNTTYPE site.

There are certain parties that have long accused GNTTYPE of not being friendly to the early cars. I would argue that this is not at all the case. Over the years we have tried to encourage owners of the early cars (both carbed and 'hot air' injected cars) to submit information to help their brethren, and received no response. (Check the archives for verification.) We would be more than willing to add such information to the site, and would also consider adding carbed/hot air owners who are willing to help get this information published and have the appropriate skills to our web team.

If you have information or skills to contribute, you can contact the web team at gnttype-webmaster@gnttype.org.
