Tuesday, January 01, 2002 - 08:12 pm i have a 85' gn, bought it with 54000 miles im the 3rd owner. When i bought it it ran ok but i can't punch the gas because it makes a slight knock and putters almost and feels like it falls an its face... its not the fuel pressure, i've checked that with a guage already and i can't figure it out. the car is all stock with the exception of hooker headers can anyone tell me if they have the same problem and if there is a solution for this "bog" the car runs fine when you gently lean into the throttle but i can't even go half throttle with out having this problem please contact me here or at nccpa@hotmail.com thanks Paul

Wednesday, January 02, 2002 - 06:34 am What do you mean by a knock noise? If its a real knock or detonation the computer will retard timing decreasing performance. just wondering if this is what is happening.

Wednesday, January 02, 2002 - 11:06 am it sounds like a backfire but not from the exhuast i can hear it coming from the engine compartment and i can't figure out what it it but as soon as it makes the noise its like im driiving a regular 3.8 regal...... i can't see what happens cause it only happens when im in the car driving but if i punch it it sort of bogs and then i have to back off the throttle and let the boost catch again????? i can't stand drving this garbage truck anymore and i would hate to junk it because the body and interior look like yesterday was 1985? and do you know any foolproof ways to get a little more umph! ? im gonna try replacing the plugs and wires and see if its just a miss and its onlly non burned fuel doing this but ill keep you posted and if you can come up with anything else i would appreciate it greatly thanks

Wednesday, January 02, 2002 - 12:48 pm Maybe a bad coil pack or coil pack module. Find somone with a good one that will let you borrow it for a little while, or call up one of the trusty Buick Vendors that this site lists, and ask if they can test it. If there is one near by, great, if not, then you will have to send it to them. If you do have to buy a new one, I think it is better to buy the one for the 86/87s. It is much cheaper, I think. You do have to buy a wiring adapter to convert it though, and maybe an adapter plate, not sure, I have only dealt with 86/87s. Or, you may just be running toooooo much boost, and you are detonating alot, which will retard the the timing, and make you lose power. Oh yeah, it will also wreck your motor real quick. Good Luck. Brian P.S. Where are you from? There may be someone local that wouldn't mind helping you troubleshoot it.

Thursday, January 03, 2002 - 09:00 am This sounds very familiar. On mine the problem was header to battery cable clearance. Under boost the motor would rock up and short out the positive batery cable. The lights would blink off and the radio would studder also. It happened down by the motor mount and I could not see it. I found it with a friends fasttrack scanner because it had a power failer at that time also. I think it does backfire to , thats what mine sounded like Hope this helps, Brent 84 T-Type 86 GS 65 GTO

Thursday, January 03, 2002 - 09:10 am My first guess would be the 85's coil pack, the price of which will give you a certain heart failure, assuming you can find one, so plan on the 86-87 conversion right now. Call Postons, or MM or one of the other reliables. If you are in or near NY, you can also consider Jack Cotton who has worked on 85s and has converted them to the 87 setup [Right, Joey?]. The other thing that occurred to me was a plugged cat. I know others on the list have mentioned similar symptoms for problem, so perhaps it is time for a test pipe. My 85's coil pack was iffy for quite a while and I kept putting off getting a new one in anticipation of converting to an 86-7 drivetrain, but I've since sold it in Upstate NY [spun a bearing, moved 3000 miles, etc.]. Good luck... Mike Elia SoCal [formerly Upstate NY] 87 T
