I'm looking to put an oil/tranny cooler on my 87 gn, i do a little towing (a boat) so on hot days it would help...the Be Cool dual unit has four rows for one and two rows for the other, which side should i use for the tranny and which for the oil? which one gets hotter and needs the cooling more. I would imagine this will help with overall engine temp also?
A couple comments... the tube and fin coolers always seem to end up with smashed fins (from bugs). I've always liked the plate coolers (like B&Ms) ... sturdy, compact, high turbulence (for heat transfer), and reasonably priced.
That said, I'd recommend that you get the tranny cooler first. The oil cooler in the radiator is pretty decent and unless something really unusual is going on, is sufficient. The tranny cooler will help the transmission live longer, keep the load on the coolant down (helping the over engine temp and oil temp).
Ken, should i go with the 16,000gvw or the 19,000gvw, i figure a little extra cooling couldn't hurt? and where should i mount it. i have stock intercooler and no plans right now for front mount, i case that matters. Thanks for the quick help...Bob
Take a gander at the transmission section of the web page (Pull down Technical Articles from the RESOURCES pull down above, and then choose TRANSMISSION from the Technical Articles pull down)
Either will work and bigger isn't a bad thing if you have space to mount it. I mounted mine up on the top passenger's side of the radiator using the little push thru plastic ties they give you. I figured that gives decent airflow (behind the bumper is a dead space).
Be very careful the hood safety latch does not come down and slam into your new trans cooler! I suggest taking out the grille to do the job and checking clearance with the hood down before mounting the cooler.
