How do I go about getting the bolts off the pulley on the crank. I tried my air impact wrench on them and all but two came off. The two remaining ones wouldn't budge and now the heads are rounded off! Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Curt.
Curt, Six ways I can think of;
1. Use a drift and a 2 lb hammer and womp it a good'un. Use a 6 point socket. Never a 12 pt with an inpact wrench.
2. Use the blue wrench. Heat the bolt head with a hand-held torch. Tap it a few times and it should come out.
3. Use WD40 on them for 3 days. Tap them every day to collapse the corrosion.
4. Use a chisel and hammer to back out the bolts.
5. If all these fail, cut the heads off either with a torch or a chisel. Remove the pulley, and drill them out.
6. There is a tool called an Easy-out. Drill the bolt and remove them with the tool. It has a left handed thread and bites into the bolt as you turn it ccw.
Sears sells a nifty socket shaped easy out. If you can get a socket on the bolt head, these deals should get them out. Try the tool dept. at Sears.
You also may be able to go one size smaller and beat that bitch on. Sometimes you need to use a 12 point if its one size smaller to get the room to allow you to drive it on.
