Hi,

I'm getting ready to tear into my engine in search of a noise problem.

I've come to the point of removing the main crankshaft bolt (on the harmonic balancer) and I'm wondering if any of you know what size socket is used on this bolt. It seems to me that a 1-1/8" is too big, but a 1 1/16" is too small...is this metric?

Thanks,
Carl

No, it isn't. The head of the bolt is 28mm. A 1-1/8" works out to 28.575 mm which is why it is "too big" as Carl stated.

While we're on the subject, if you look at the Chevy LS1/LS6 engines, they drilled the damper bolt way deeper into the crank. It almost breaks through the #1 counterweight. It allows for a much longer bolt and puts the nose of the crank into compression for its entire length. The bolt is much less likely to come loose, and it makes for a much stronger crank. A worthwhile engineering change for any engine.
