When I got my 87 GN, it had the stock intercooler with shroud, but no scoop. I've been putting it off and putting it off, finally I have done a bunch of upgrades (turbo, injectors etc) and am a little dissapointed with the car. How big of a deal is it not having that scoop? Be gentle....

Hows about having a radiator without access to outside air? Not very efficient wouldn't you think? Ever put a piece of cardboard in front of a radiator in the winter to heat-up a stubborn car so you gan get some interior heat in 20-below weather?
..same theory. No scoop - you're sucking engine-compartment air in your "intercooler"...maybe you should just call it a hairdryer, and be done with it?
all kidding aside - an intercooler can not do it's job without cooler air than ambient in your engine compartment. You're basically going straight from the turbo to Throttle-body if your intercooler isn't cooled itself...hello detonation!
I addition to the scoop, do the rubbermaid garbage can mod. I swear it gave me 2/10 in the 1/4 mile...

Strange but true. A lot of vendors sell similar mods for $50 or so. A lot of guys on this board, on the other boards, and in our local club swear by this mod. And I wasn't kidding, it really did knock 2/10 off my 1/4 time...of course, good and bad air days could have affected this...just search the archives for spark plug debates and you can see what I mean... ;-)
Kirban sells a nice one made of fiberglass. Supposed to slide into the stock scoop. Sells for like 35.00. Pretty nice.

Yeah, that's the extention scoop that kirban sells. You have to have the stock scoop on for it to work. It is similar to the rubbermaid mod, but a nice fiberglass piece so you don't have to cut up a trash can

Hey, if someone wouldn't mind, can you explain why I should be getting detonation without this scoop? I realize that it doesn't really cool the air, but how is this any different from the hot air GNs? Also, I thought cooler air required more fuel, and since I have my fuel pressure sort of high anyway, should things be ok? I know there has to be a hole in my knowledge somewhere....someone fill that hole please
