While that's not what I did, it's still a lot safer than having to go back later and undo what you did! Since my engine was already in pieces, I decided to take the risk, but I thought about it long and hard... Secondly, when I was looking at the edge of the ring in relation to the 0 deg mark, I wasn't using the keyway in the balancer as a reference point, though I can see how you might think that from the picture. I was just trying to get a reference line from the centerline of the balancer to the 0 deg mark and see how that compared to the edge of the ring. I also took into account the fact that I found my 0 deg mark to be ~1.5 deg off when I checked it with a piston stop while degreeing a cam, so when I reinstalled the timing ring I did not line it up exactly with the TDC mark, I lined it up where I had determined TDC to actually be. As for how I got the timing ring off without bending it, I don't really recall! I think I did bend it a little, but when I reinstalled it I made sure it was all bent back and level. I know I tweaked it some on reinstallation, I remember checking to make sure all the edges were parallel to the balancer. John |
