Recently went after noise in front of engine ,popped cap off cam sensor and window on relucter wheel is pointed towards passenger side. Is that right? Should i reset cam sensor? Car ran ok before. Any suggestions on noise? It's definatley coming from timing cover.
Is the engine at TDC compression stroke on cylinder #1? If yes, then yes, reset it. If no, *probably* not. The car will run, as you say, "OK", 180* out.
Can't say where the noise is from. Hardly any info.

Some TR's have a clicking noise heard loudest at the cam sensor. It sounds somewhat like a lifter noise. It will come and go, most noticeable with cold engine. In 1987 I worked with Buick engineering on the problem. We changed several parts with no success. No fix was ever found and since it could not be heard when inside car with windows rolled up they considered it normal and gave up. I have one TR that does it and it has never caused a problem.
The cam sensor is known to make noise! There are spacers/shims that could solve this problem/noise. The noise is the up and downward play of the cam sensor, just like a normal distributor after excessive wear. You can purchase an assortment of shims (different thickness) or buy a new cam sensor. Not sure of the part numbers, I will try and find them and repost. In the mean while, you can try you GM or a good parts dealer to see if they can be found.
