Ernest E Reed (Erniereed) | Thursday, June 26, 2003 - 05:55 pm Does anyone have any idea whats going on ? I just installed a new TA49 Turbo yesterday Took Car out for a test Run. 10-12lbs of boost at WOT. Appeared to be running great. Good spoolup no indication af any problems. Tonight i was running 60 MPH out on the highway. booted to get around traffic. Made a weird sound? Pulled over, couldn't find anything wrong. Hoses, clamps wastgate everything appears O.K. Now if I give it any throttle at all it makes a high pitch wineing sound. the more throttle the louder it gets with no power or boost. Have a VDO boost gauge, walpro 307,HWK,Adj.FPR,Adj.Wastgate,3"down/hooker exhaust,Cotton tranny, Orange stripe 2800 converter. Can it be the new TURBO or something else. Any help would be appreciated |
Jay (Jayster) | Thursday, June 26, 2003 - 08:38 pm did you install the "y" vacuum piece incorrectly coming from the wastegate solenoid? Maybe you popped a vac line off or your boost gauge line popped off and it's whistling while *trying* to boost because of all that air around the opening of the line? the straightest part of the "y" goes to the turbo housing. |

Ernest E Reed (Erniereed) | Sunday, June 29, 2003 - 09:00 am Jay Couldn't find any problems with the installation so I pulled the new turbo out and couldn't believe what I found. It appears the nut that holds the turbine blade assembly in place (I think thats what you call it ?) came off and completely destroyed the turbo! The nut goes on with a reverse thread so can"t figure why it came loose? The vendor I purchased it from agrees to replace it at no charge. No ride for a week or two but somewhat relieved. Now I just got to figure out how to clean the aluminuim chips out of my intercooler? Thanks for the input. You guys are the best. |
Hal Humphrey (Hump) | Sunday, June 29, 2003 - 09:19 am I had this very same thing happen to my Typhoon. I had a radiator shop clean my intercooler and I installed a new turbo under warranty from GM. In a few weeks the engine started using a quart 0f oil per 200 miles. The aluminum got into the internal parts of the engine specifically fouling the rings which in turn caused the ring lands to break in some cylinders. GM had to install a new engine. |
