I just ordered a complete engine kit for my 85 GN and asked the sales person for a new TTY head bolt kit. They didn't list them. I then looked on the Autozone and Advance Auto web site to find out they didn't list them either. I swear I read on this site where all GNs used TTY bolts. What's the deal?

Actually, the older blocks (i.e. 1984/85) didn't use the TTYs, from what I've seen. Only the 86/87s with the composite head gaskets (the earlier ones had steel gaskets).

Thanks for the reply. I'm picking up my block and heads from the machine shop later this week and want to start the assembly process on the weekend.

Doesn't TTY stand for Torque To Yield? I didn't think this was a brand of bolts, but was an acronym. I thought TTY was a method of tightening bolts. Doesn't it have something to do with bolt stretch? It seems to me I remember reading that because tightening bolts with a torque wrench is undependable because of the varying amount of friction in the threads, with the TTY method, they just run the bolts down finger tight and then turn the bolts a certain number of degrees to get uniform stretch.
And it seems this would be especially important to us turbo guys because of the increased stress on our head gaskets. I also remember reading that once you use the TTY method, the bolts cannot be reused because they have been stretched to the point where they won't return to their original length.
If I'm off track here, please let me know.

Yes, that's what I was talking about. Not a brand. I actually had to use TTY bolts on a Mercury Sable 3.8L engine last year. Had aluminum heads. Stupid gaskets blew out. I'll never work on one of those ever, ever, ever, ever again.
