    Dwight Hayden (Elevensecgn) | Sunday, July 29, 2001 - 08:05 pm  Changing to synthetic oil is fine if the engine is relatively fresh, all seals are still pliable and the internals of the engine is clean. If the engine has high miles and had a steady diet of dino oil for a long time, then was switched over to synthetic you may have a multitude of problems. The first would be a dramatic increase in oil leakage around the front and rear main seals, followed by probable increase in oil consumption. If the engine was not maintained properly beforehand and a "dirty" oil had contaminated the inside with sludge, that stuff may now break down and plug the oil pickup screen. (Resulting in partial or complete loss of oil pressure.) Bottom line, is to not change types of oil after a lot of miles have accumulated. Feed it what ever it has had for most of it's life or your well meant "improvement" in oil may actually cause more harm than good.
