I have a blown piston on the center cylinder on the left bank. The other cylinders have 150lbs of compression. Should I just replace the one piston,rebuild the whole motor,or buy a new short/long block? Thanks in advance for any input, Tommy
Tommy, It's always the same answer. "How much money do you have to spend?" I had the same problem, took it to Aggressive Performance and Bruce rebuilt my whole engine when we found someone had rebuilt my engine with .030" over Chev 305 c.i. pistons. I port matched the heads and manifold while it was down and Bruce did a lot of other small stuff that needed attention. I'm glad I did! You just can't beat the expertise of a professional.
Hi Guys,thanks gor replying. My mechanic advised me to buy a long block and avoid multiple problems that could come up with the rest of the motor. I called Buick and they said that this motor is no longer available. Any suggestions?
GM doesn't have them but check the for sale ads on the boards. I see them for sale often.
How do you know it is a piston? Maybe the head gasket is gone?

1st suggestion is do not buy a long block unless it is from one of the quality vendors that are on this list / part of the GN / T-Type community.
Very few know the in's and out's of these powerplants. Spend a little more now and save yourself thousands down the road.. Many on this list have been there done that.

If your mechanic suggested a new long block, I would suggest a new mechanic.
If the mechanic did not know how difficult it is to find a long block for a turbo Buick, he probably does not know enough to be reliable in fixing one.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I would be concerned, and I would check around to see if there are other GN or Turbo Regal owners who have experience with this shop.

What area do you live in? The guys on the list will help you find a qualified mechanic who specializes in GNs.
If I had to rebuild again I would contact "Grooms Engines" in Tennessee. They offer a long block VIN 7 turbo for about what I paid for machine work and parts.
I'm unable to locate Grooms Engines. I live in New Orleans. I got a price from Jasper Engines to rebuild mine for about $2500. Are they any good?
