I have an 87 G.N. that hasn't run rught since I bought it. Pulled the front cover per website guidance and found the chain and gears are ok. My question is, can the cam be 180 degrees out of phase or did i not get things right before i pulled the cover. the intake valve looks like it is getting ready to open but the dot on the cam gear is facing up instead of the dot on the crank gear. The engine is blowing back thru the intake and the valves all hold carb cleaner. Intake is off. Or do I have 2 blown head gaskets that are leaking between the cylinders??
Help!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks

First, rotate the motor around until the two dots line up. Are the valves closed on #1 cylinder (i.e. TDC?)?

You should be able to put your finger over the spark plug hole and feel compression as you come put to TDC....

If not, then somehow the cam is installed 180 out (did the car run?) Really wierd...

Yes it ran but kicked back thru the intake. Vacuum was around 13 inches. I thought the cam was off but then last night I remembered that the #1 cylinder is on the compression when the dots line up so....
The chain doesn't have much slack in it so I am guessing both headgaskets are blown between the cylinders. Not all cylinders are blowing back thru the intake. It ran worse as it warmed up and also seemed to detonate occasionally!
