I have an 87 GN with a lifter like ticking noise. I have removed the timing cover looking for the answer. My cover is worn at the cam button but the button, chain and tensioner are intact. Is any amount of cover wear acceptable? Can I weld the cover back up or is replacement the only option? TIA ( I will of course replace everything else)

The Buick Power Source Book from late 80's shows a small thin rectangular plate (mild steel ? anodized aluminum ?) epoxied/riveted to the inside "wear surface" of the front timing cover. Havent personaly tried it but the photo layout in the book looks convincing. Either way.. if you have the front cover off, now is the time to do a quick simple mod that should extend life expectancy. The spring behind the cam buttom allows for big tolerances.

Thanks for the info. I welded the cover tonight, I will leave the wear area raised a bit. I ordered the needle bearing button from GM also.
Thanks again.
