Steve Vaillancourt (Stevev) | Thursday, February 07, 2002 - 08:42 pm I had a person tell me if I ran a 160 stat in my GN not to expect it to live much more than 40,000 miles. He said i should keep the engine about 200 degrees. He's by no means a GN expert and i am just curious.I thought I read somewhere that the 160 stat kept the electronics cooler and that provided longer life with increased HP due to cooler inlet charge. Please share your opinions. |
Ken Mosher (Kenmosher) | Thursday, February 07, 2002 - 08:52 pm Guess we should tell that to some of our owners that have well over 100K miles on there TRs, eh? Seriously, the cooler thermostat helps control detonation, due to keeping the heads cooler. The point of the higher operating temp is to boil off moisture in the motor/oil and for better efficiency and not a bad thing in some powerplants. However, his advice on the TRs was (pardon the pun) all HOT AIR! |
frank marshall (Turbofrank) | Friday, February 08, 2002 - 05:47 am If your TR is a daily driver and you don't race it you can stay with the 180. If you live in extreme cold climate as i once did (MI) it's good for the winter. It's easy to change. I had 230k on my car with the 160 before the rebuild. Frank |

Steve Vaillancourt (Stevev) | Friday, February 08, 2002 - 05:18 pm Thanks guys. My TR isn't a daily driver unless one of my other cars is broke. It sits 6 days a week and every Sat gets driven about 50..highway miles. I take it on long trips because of the comfort and economy. And yeah I've been known to get on it for a good throw back in the seat!!!I LOVE MY GN(almost as much as my wife..LOL) |
BOONIE HARMON (Boonie1979) | Sunday, February 17, 2002 - 06:59 pm Mine is a daily driver and I plan to upgrade the chip. Wouldn't it be better for me to go to 160? |
Jon_Jeffers (1stgn) | Monday, February 18, 2002 - 09:45 am I thought the reason hypertech started putting in the 160 tstat is because an engine which runs cooler temp will produce more power, where as a engine that runs hotter will be more efficient in terms of emissions/hydrocarbons. Which is why GM engines started running hotter, CAFE. I would agree with the earlier comment re: cooler cylinder heads reduce detonation |
