Hi, I’m new here and was wondering if anyone has ever heard of what I am about to tell you. I have the opportunity to buy an 87 that was stolen and re tagged with an 84 Vin tag. The state police impounded it and then released the car back to the towing company saying that if they did any more digging that the car could be crushed. They are going to allow the car to get tags with an 84 title. So I will have a 87GN that has a 84 GN vin tag on it. Is there a hidden vin somewhere on the car? If so I could list the vin number and maybe find the true owner. Anyway I just was wondering if anyone else may have experienced this.

Something doesn't sound right. The last eight of the vin is stamped on the drivers side of the engine block at the bottom rear where it meets the trans. It's a vertical stamp on a smooth machined surface. If it's an 87 GN the first part will be "1G4GJ117-HP then the last six numbers. The dash I used is a check diget used by GM to prevent vin errors on warrenty claims. The state can track it from the last eight and so can GM. Also look under the rear seat bottom and see if the build sheet is still there. Sometimes there is one on top of the fuel tank.
Could you have an '84 with an '87 front clip, engine, and tail lights? Be careful!
why not just buy a true '87? No good will come of buying an "87 tagged as an 84"..insurance-wise, value-wise, and legal-wise.
Imagine getting pulled over and trying to explain all that to a cop who knows his GN's and is having a bad day? They could impound your car on the spot no matter what documentation you have. I have a hard time believing a stolen car would be re-released as a totally different year. Where did the '84 Vin tag come from then? A stolen title-car is marked as such from the state - they NEVER remark them as a totally different year because that is illegal unless the other Vin locations on the car designate that it is a true '84, and in fact the car was an 87 "look-a-like" as Don alluded to.
Seems like an awful waste to me. It will never be a true '84, and will never be a true '87...so why even bother? You dont want an '84's insurance value to represent your '87 car if it gets smacked. Im sure there's a ton of more things im not listing..all pointing to BAD NEWS in my opinion..
If it's cheap and look half decent buy it.
