Monday, August 13, 2001 - 01:31 pm I have been unable to locate Jim Ruggles, who used to be north of Atlanta, GA a few years back. I have a 4.1L Buick in my '66 Jeep that the thrust bearing keeps going out on. I visited Jim in his shop a few years back and discussed a 4.1L build up before I started my project. I believe he is the only one with an answer on how to correct my problem as he has had extensive experience with 4.1's. I tried Connelly's and Kirban's and they have no ideas since it's not a turbo. I have also seen and checked all the issues on posts regarding thrust bearing failure on this and other sites. If anyone could let me know of Jim's whereabouts, I be greatly appreciative. Also if there are any ideas out there, that would also be appreciated. Thanks. Tim Bothwell timbothwel@aol.com

Monday, August 13, 2001 - 08:12 pm Tim, You may find this link helpful as well: http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/transmission/trantsb.html Pay particular attention to TB415. A problem in the lines/cooler may be the problem, and replacing the entire trans and converter will not solve the problem. Dan

Monday, August 13, 2001 - 11:35 pm Thanks Dan. I have seen that and showed it to my engine man. He said he'd check the cooler line pressures. I mentioned it to my tranny man and he said that he's seen coolers that have been installed with the plugs still blocking the inlets. He said that the tranny was smoked, but no problems with the engine. Said that some people that had leaks in coolers would just clamp off the lines. Again they'd come in with smoked tranny, but no engine problems. So, it makes me believe it something in the 4.1L engine. Even had the engine man put his son's 3.8L from a T-Type Regal without the turbo in the Jeep and no thrust bearing wear. Would really like to locate Ruggles or anyone with extensive experience with the 4.1L engine. Thanks again. Tim Bothwell

Tuesday, August 14, 2001 - 05:37 am On our mailing list, Jim Haas answered the initial question by stating: >>He works for Ernie Elliot's NASCAR team in Dawsonville, GA. I realize this kind of wandered from its original topic, but lets please try to keep the tech chat in the appropriate area of the board.
