When I go WOT on my 87 GN it goes up to 6000 RPM and does not shift (no matter what gear it is in). I have to let off of the gas pedal and then it will shift. The car has a K&N air filter, 160 thermostat and a stage one chip. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

From what I understand, the most likely cause of this is that the little spring on the governor in the trans has flung off. This is a common problem on the 200-R4 trans. You will have to drop the trans pan, remove the governor housing (at the rear of the trans), and pull the governor out. If the little spring that pushes against the weights is gone, you found your problem. The spring usually ends-up in the pan, so be careful when you are draining your fluid.

The "fix" is to install a set screw into the governor to hold the spring in place. Be sure to remove a little bit of material from the weights to make-up for the weight of the set screw. The mass of the weights is what controls your shift point at WOT.

Good Luck!
