Hey guys. I appreciate all the good advice and everyone has been on target with their diagnoses. I now have a clicking sound similar to small bearings in a can. This happens when the car is in gear. It doesn't affect performance, but is annoying. Is it a simple fix? The niose started soon after I replaced the TCC, filter and fluid. Thanks agian for all your help.

I have a similar situation - except it happens whether the car is in gear or park - sounded more like a pipe rattling but cant pinpoint it. Put it on a lift at my mechanics place today to look but as soon as I pulled in the door, no more noise.

We looked at the pipes, replaced a hanger etc, but as soon as I got 3 miles away, it was back.

Its drivin me nuts and sounds terrible..

Thanks for any ideas

Phil and Ernie
Pull your flywheel cover and make sure your torque converter bolts are tight.

I'd definatley check the flywheel bolts, nine came loose at ~18k / 17 psi man what a racket! Exit 1 D5 converter! Another thing you may want to check is while you're driving and hearing the sound, grab the shift collar (the part of the steering coulmn that turns when you move the transmission shift lever) and gently apply LIGHT pressure left or right and see if it stops the noise. Light pressure because you could actually shift the transmission like this, don't want that while driving. The sound is caused by worn shift linkage. Drove me nuts for a couple years 'till I figured it out, with the help of this list, of course!! You can either replace the bushings or let it rattle, now that you know it's nothing;) Good luck.

Jon:

Will do the flywheel bolts - thanks for your reply.

Joe:

Had that linkage noise like you describe some time ago. I just put a little pressure on the shifter one way or another and it goes away for a while. This is not the same noise tho. It was doin it again today and I went to the mechanics with it. He thinks the honeycomb has come loose inside the converter. Sounds like a pipe kinda noise too; so I am leanin toward that cause the noise began after a period of backfiring through the exhaust. Fortunately, the cat is only 6 months old and is still in warranty :)

Just gat a slab poured today for my garage - will be in there next week lookin at the torque converter bolts.

Thanks both for your reply - much appreciated...
