While shifting from Park to Drive, I heard a "tink" sound. My 87 GN is completely driveable but there is no longer a need to push the button on the shifter handle.

I pulled the handle off and that white post is recessed down into the chrome shifter tube.

I won't have an opportunity to look at it until Tuesday but I thouht somebody might have seen this problem before.

TIA

Brian

Brian, at the bottom of that recessed post is an attached spring that may have fell off or broke. Either way u have to take the top half of the console out. If spring fell off just reattach, if broken replace it with a new one or finagle with the old spring to somehow work.

Also, the post can be spun around to be adjusted up and down slightly. Sometimes if the spring isn't broken, this is enough to make it contact the shifter handle innards properly. In this case, it does sound like your spring is broken, though.

Hola.

Yep, my spring was broken when I bought my car. Luckily, there are plenty of picked over cars at the boneyard that still have this spring available.

Just find a n/a regal with the console missing and you can slip it right off. The junkyard will probably give it to you for free.

I did also have to spin the white post down some.

One of our vendors has these springs, can't remember who. I went to Ace hardware and picked a similar one up for peanuts. (salted in the shell)
