Here's the situation with my car. It's an 87 TR with app. 150,000 miles on it. The tranny and torque converter are all original as far as I know. My problems is after my car shifts in between 3 and 4. Once the car shifts to 4th if I decelerate back down to a stop, 75 percent of the time when I start to accelerate again the car will abrubtly shift from what feels like a 1-3 shift. As soon as the car shifts out of first gear the engine bogs down to about 1100 rpm or so as a result of the car missing 2nd. It's as if the car wants to stay in 4th gear or something. If anybody has any help or advice, I would greatly appreciate it!!! Thank you very much.

I had a GM car at work the other day that the TCC solenoid was not disengaging. It would actually kill the engine when you came to a stop.
Replaced it and it worked fine after that.

My engine has never shut off as a result of this problem, but I'll definitely look into that as a possible solution. Thanks for your help.

From the description it seems as if it is ur TCC solenoid. First u want to make sure it is (the TCC sol.) before assuming or replacing any parts. Don't know if u Were driving this vehicle before this problem progressed or if u just purchased the car, but I would try n change the EPROM chip first if u have a spare as the lock up TCC is controlled by the EPROM chip in the ECM (computer). If there is no change I would then disconnect the 4 pin prong of/on the Trans. on the drivers side just above the linkage. If symptoms don't exist any longer, more than likely it's the TCC solenoid in the trans. If symptoms persist write back and we'll continue to go through the "process of elimination's"!

Thanks Mario,

I've already tried changing out chips and that hasn't helped. This is a problem that I've noticed with my car for pretty much as long as I've owned it, which is since October of 1999. It hasn't worsened or gotten better. I'll try unplugging the 4 pronged piece that you mentioned and see if that helps. Otherwise, I'll be back!
