first I would like to say thanx to the people who helped me with my last problem who have been most helpfull, Now a few tranny questions. I have a level ten built 4l60e from my 96 impala ss laying around with a 3200 stall t/c and figured that it would be a good upgrade for the buick I know nothing about the 200r4 found in the buick but am assuming the bolt pattern is the same to the block but what about to the flexplate? Another question is size will I encounter clearance problems and have to modify the crossmember. and what about the speedo does the buick use a cable or electronic speed sensor the buick is a 87 turbo regal and if anyone thinks this is just really bad idea let me know

I think it's a bad idea. The 4L60E is computer controlled, and has a much different 1st gear ratio. It would slow the GN down quite a bit. You might want to call Bruce Toelle or email him at 916-739-0510

He's the master of all things transmission :)

I believe the 4l60E is more than 1.5 inches longer than the 200R4 as well, so right off the bat you're going to have problems fitting it. I dont think the 4L60E is 27 spline either, but im not sure. It will probably cost you close to the price of a 200R4 just to fit the 4L60E in, and it will be slower than a 200R4 to begin with.

thanx I will be sticking to 200 at least until I blow it. After all it is tradition for me somehow I have managed to blow a trans in every car I have ever had.

Switching from a 2004R to a 700R4/4L60E you will need to shorten the driveshaft 3". You'll need a bellhousing adapter kit. All the 700r4's are Chevy bellhousig pattern only - I'm pretty sure the 4L60 and 4L60E cases are the same as the 700R4. There are tailshaft housings with an additional mount on them - they came in '82-'84 Caprices - if you use this new tailshaft housing with a the 2004R crossmember, the tranny mount will just about line up - may need a little grinding of the crossmember mount slot. Only prob is You can't use that Caprice tailshaft hsng with the electric speedo output - there may be a way to adapt this or another tailshaft housing for the 4L60's with a mount, I don't know. I second the above about slowing the car down - I would guess in a 13 sec car, you'd loose .1 sec or more ET in the 1/4 mi.
