Jason Shreve (Hurstolds) | Monday, August 25, 2003 - 03:45 pm I was reading an article here on www.gnttype.org about torque converter identification. I own a 1984 Hurst Olds. The hub/neck of the converter cracked. After removing it I noticed that the d5 converter had been replaced with a d7 unit. I went to my local converter repair shop to get a replacement. They sold me a CB8D unit. I was noticing that the code reads out as the following: C = 200/200-4R, 325-4L & pre 85 700-R4 B = 140 = 1996 rpm 8 = 300 ft/lb 44 degrees travel D = Converter clutch type, 3 lugs with 180 degree weld on each lug. (diesel) What do you think this is a suitable replacement for a D5? The diesel comment has me worried. Thanks for you help, Jason |

Scott Moody (87gn_70gs) | Thursday, August 28, 2003 - 07:36 am The stock GN D5 code is "CBCF". The K-factor of 140 (stall) is the same as the GN D5 so that's ok. The clutch capacity is slightly less; the GN D5 has 330 ft-lbs capacity and has different travel, 28 degrees. F on the D5 signifies a 245 mm style lug, without the 180 weld (whatever that means). I say if it'll bolt up, use it. |
